Associate and Affiliate Scientists

We welcome the involvement of researchers at academic institutions in the Maritimes who have a demonstrated interest in patient-oriented research and evidence implementation. 

There are two categories of scientific membership: 

  • Associate Scientist
  • Affiliate Scientist

You can apply for membership by sending your completed application form and a CV in a single PDF file to info@mssu.ca. Applications are typically processed within 7-10 business days.

Membership will be renewed on an annual basis subject to good standing (see Membership Guidelines for more details).

Associate Scientists

To be eligible for the Associate Scientist affiliation, applicants must:

  • Hold an academic appointment* at a university/affiliated research institution, or an appointment with research responsibilities at an affiliated hospital/research centre/institute in the Maritimes
  • Be eligible to independently hold grants and supervise trainees
  • Be engaged in patient-oriented, evidence implementation research
  • Show commitment to the research goals of MSSU

*Academic appointments include tenured or tenure-track, and limited-term appointments; clinical scientists, clinical faculty or other appointments approved by a senior official (i.e. CEO or VP Research). Adjunct and instructor appointments are not considered academic appointments.

Opportunities

Associate Scientists can:

  • Serve on MSSU Committees
  • Apply as a scientific lead for an MSSU Priority Project (Nova Scotia only)
  • Apply for a fee reduction for data access
  • Take advantage of opportunities for networking with decision-makers and other Maritime researchers
  • Chose to list their ‘MSSU Associate Scientist’ affiliation on their Curriculum Vitae for academic acknowledgement of contributions and affiliation

Additionally, there are funding opportunities available to eligible graduate students and early career professionals supervised by Associate Scientists: 

Researchers must apply for Associate Scientist status before their students apply for an MSSU Student Award.

Roles and Responsibilities

Associate Scientists take an active role in the MSSU community by:

  • Making meaningful contributions and participating in at least one MSSU activity per year, if asked. This could include, for example, joining an MSSU committee, contributing to peer review, or leading a training activity.
  • Providing a research profile (updated annually) for the MSSU website and database of experts
  • Acknowledging MSSU support or trainee funding, as applicable
  • Agreeing to be included on the MSSU distribution list and to receive email notices

Affiliate Scientists

The Affiliate Scientist designation is a more flexible option designed for individuals who do not hold an academic appointment. To be eligible, applicants must still be engaged in patient-oriented, evidence implementation research and committed to the research goals of the MSSU, but they may be:

  • An affiliated member of a university/affiliated research institution, hospital/research centre/institute in the Maritimes, for example instructors, adjunct or emeritus faculty, OR
  • An administrator at a provincial, national, or international, government or non-governmental, organization, OR
  • A resident, postdoctoral fellow, or other senior trainee.

Opportunities

Affiliate Scientists can:

  • Serve on MSSU Committees 
  • Take advantage of opportunities for networking with decision-makers and other Maritime researchers
  • Chose to list the ‘MSSU Affiliate Scientist’ affiliation on Curriculum Vitae for academic acknowledgement of contributions and affiliation
  • Apply for the Associate Scientist affiliation upon renewal of their membership, if circumstances warrant (i.e. change in academic appointment status)

Roles and Responsibilities

Affiliate Scientists take an active role in the MSSU community by:

  • Making meaningful contributions to MSSU activities and contributing to at least one MSSU activity per year, if asked. This could include, for example, joining an MSSU committee, contributing to peer review, or leading a training activity.
  • Providing a research profile (updated yearly) for website and be included in the MSSU database of experts
  • Agreeing to be listed on the MSSU distribution list and to receive email notices

Membership Guidelines

Membership will be renewed on an annual basis subject to good standing. To be in good standing, members must have actively contributed to the goals of MSSU, provided their updated information to the MSSU for the current academic year, and exhibited professional behaviour and ethical standards in the workplace.

Successful applicants will be offered the Associate Scientist or Affiliate Scientist designation based on which eligibility criteria they meet.
